Hiroshima’s history

Ohw wow can’t believe I’m traveling so long now. My new destination is Hiroshima. Just arrived here and you can tell there is so much history. The weather is a bit grey but still dry. From Okayama to Hiroshima it was just 40 minute with the Shinkansen. A bit early at my hotel so I dropped my stuff there and walked around a bit. Saw a Starbucks, must say this one was very nice. It kinda looks like a library. Bought coffee, cause I really needed coffee and sat by the window watching people passing by, always fun to do.

Also I am not staying that long time in Hiroshima I actually have just one full day. So I just booked a tour so I can mostly see the highlights. Otherwise I would just travel on my own. But this tour was fun and I also met a great Spanish girl, she was also traveling on her own for the first time.

The group was a big group, it was around 40 persons. We first went to the Atomic Bomb Dome. Very impressive to see. You could immediately see the tragedy. It’s so hard to imagine that it happened. Around the Dome there were more monuments to visit. Our tour guide Tom knows so much about the history.

From there we walked to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. There you can see what happened and the impact it had. So many people lost their lives, it’s truly heartbreaking to see. Some of the pictures I just couldn’t watch.

After the museum we went to our lunch destination. We had Okonomiyaki. That is a Japanese savory pancake. I thought I could finish it easily, but it was quite filling, though very tasty.

With a full stomach we went to our next destination. We headed to Miyajima. To get there we had to take a 10-minute ferry ride. The weather also changed from cloudy to very sunny and hot! Since it was low tide we could walk up to the Torri Gate. There were so many people out there and no shade. I think the best time to visit is at high tide, when there are no people because you can not walk up to it. Then it looks that the Tori Gate is floating on the water. It’s also known as Miyajima’s floating red Torri Gate.

A funny coincidence happened as well, someone just called out my name and I thought “who knows me in Japan?” It was the family I had met in Nagano. They were there too, we had a brief chat, it was so fun to talk with them.

The island is so beautiful and there is so much to see, but we only had I think 2 hours there, so just had to explore quickly.

Back at our pick up spot I went with Christina the Spanish girl to get some drinks and have some dinner. Had a great time and it was a great last day in Hiroshima. From there on I traveled back again. This time to Osaka! Join me there next time!
